The Disciples Clinic of Athens, Texas was created and incorporated in August, 2008. A Board of Directors was elected and Officers appointed. Work immediately began on an application to the IRS for status as a tax-exempt charitable organizaation. That designation was granted on December 30, 2008.
Soon after incorporation, the Board began a search for a building to house the clinic. Several existing options were considered, but none proved successful until news of our need reached the leadership of the Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispanic church. That congregation had moved from its original building at 604 York Street in Athens to a new and larger facility. The original facility had stood vacant for two years while the congregation prayed for a useful mission which the building might serve.
The result was that a three year rent-free lease was signed on April 15, 2009 which allows the clinic to renovate the former church building into a first-class medical clinic to serve the Henderson County citizens in need of primary health care.
As of August 1, 2009, work is well under way on this renovation work. With the help of several volunteers with the Baptist Men's organization of FBC Athens, and some of the men who volunteer with Labor of Love, the interior demolition has been completed and new walls are being framed up for the clinic exam rooms, offices, etc. New heating and air conditioning equipment will be installed, along with new ceiling tile and flooring. Plumbing and electrical work is in progress.
Contributions and grants continue to be received which will provide funds for the renovation and operation of the clinic. On-going commitments of funds will be needed to sustain the clinic operations.
We have commitments from several medical, dental and support volunteers, but many more will be needed. We hope to have he clinic open arount Oct. 1, 2009. We urge you to join us in this effort to provide this essential service to those in need.
